The benefits of self monitored security

Would you pay a monthly premium for security monitoring?

There has been a lot of discussion and comparison between the traditional monitored security systems and the new, more DIY approach to home security which is monitored by the residents themselves, over the past few years. There are pros and cons to each one, but I would like to go into more detail and explore the benefits of a reliable self-monitored security system.

Self-monitored security systems are exactly what they sound like; they’re security systems you monitor yourself. These can include motion sensors, silent alarms, sirens, door sensors, and security cameras that send text or push notifications or call your mobile phone when they’re set off, and most connect to smartphone apps that allow you to monitor them remotely and can provide access to neighbors or other emergency contacts. If you receive a notification when you’re not at home, you can call 911 yourself or have a neighbor look for signs of a break-and-enter. Some of these systems even come equipped with a speaker, so you can tell the burglars they’ve been caught on camera and police are on the way. Smart homes and self monitored security systems have many benefits. From what we gathered based on users’ experiences and the research that has been done in the field, here are some of the most important benefits :

  • Relatively inexpensive after installation (no monthly fees since you’re monitoring the system yourself)

  • Easy to relocate to a different room or new home since you can usually install and uninstall these systems yourself

  • Cell phone alerts notify you when the system has been activated and you can decide whether or not to call the police (avoiding false alarms)

  • Camera systems record videos of intruders, which can be helpful to police when trying to track them down

So if you live in a secure apartment building, for instance, but would like a personal security camera for remotely checking in on your children, pets and service providers; or maybe your budget is very tight and you can’t always afford monthly monitoring. If you’re confident that you or others would respond to an alarm, then an unmonitored security system could be effective. A high-decibel alarm can sound for a few minutes if sensors are triggered, and lights can be set off too. With smartphone-compatible security, you can also receive text alerts about possible intrusions.

To sum up, paying for professionally monitored home security isn’t always practical; especially with the abundance of smart home technology in this day and age.
